When people think of heroes, they often picture someone extraordinary. I picture my mum, Denice.

After retiring on ill health because of her own disability, life could have become quieter for her. Instead, she chose to devote herself to caring full-time for her 80 year old dad, Thomas.

As Thomas has grown older, his mobility has deteriorated, and he’s become increasingly prone to falls. Every day, Mum provides his personal care, prepares his meals, manages his medication, keeps the house running, and is always there whenever he needs her. There are no days off, no clocking in or out, and no expectation of praise. She simply does it because she loves her dad.

One of Thomas’s greatest joys is spending time in the garden. Although he now needs constant supervision because of his falls risk, Mum still makes sure he can enjoy being outdoors safely. She understands that caring isn’t just about meeting physical needs, it’s about protecting someone’s dignity, independence and happiness for as long as possible.

Being an unpaid carer has meant making countless sacrifices. Mum rarely has the freedom to go out or enjoy time for herself because Thomas always comes first. Despite living with her own disability, she never lets that stop her from giving him the best care possible. She quietly carries the physical and emotional demands of caring without ever asking for recognition.

Watching her care for my grandad has shown me what unconditional love truly looks like. She treats him with endless patience, kindness and respect, ensuring he can remain in the home he loves, surrounded by familiar comforts and family.

Unpaid carers like my mum save families and services countless hours through their dedication, yet so much of what they do goes unseen. They don’t do it for thanks or rewards…they do it out of love.

To our family, Denice is nothing short of extraordinary. She has given my grandad the priceless gift of safety, dignity and companionship, while sacrificing so much of herself along the way.

If anyone deserves to be recognised, celebrated and reminded that everything they do matters, it’s my mum. I couldn’t be prouder to call her my hero, and I hope this nomination gives her the appreciation she so deeply deserves.
