I would like to pledge my thanks to my mum, who has been an unpaid carer for my stepdad for over 10 years.

For more than a decade, Mum devoted her life to caring for him. She put his needs before her own every single day, providing love, support and companionship through all the challenges that came with being a full-time carer.

Being an unpaid carer meant making sacrifices that many people never see. Mum missed out on family activities, celebrations, days out and precious opportunities to make memories with those around her, because she needed to be at home caring for him. While others were able to come and go, her life revolved around ensuring he was safe, comfortable and cared for.

She never saw her role as a burden; she simply did what needed to be done out of love. The patience, strength and dedication she showed over those years are qualities that deserve to be recognised.

Sadly, my stepdad passed away two months ago, but the care and compassion Mum gave him will always be remembered. Her contribution as an unpaid carer was immeasurable, and the personal sacrifices she made often went unseen.

This is my pledge of thanks to Mum: thank you for the years you gave, the moments you missed, and the love you showed every single day. You are an incredible example of what it means to care for someone, and you deserve to be recognised.
